Lyra Belaqua's universe is run by the Magisterium and the souls of humans look like animals. She lives in Oxford with her uncle and tutor, Professor Lord Asriel, who is a research scientist working on a Dust which will bring different worlds together. With the kidnapping of her friend, Roger, by the Gobblers, Lyra goes to the North Artic, to find him. She travels with Mrs Coulter and she has a golden compass which allows her to know when she's being lied to and to recognise the truth. And that's where she discovers the truth about herself and about Mrs. Coulter.
