The promise Tristan makes to the girl he loves to bring her a fallen star from the magical Kingdom of Stormhold is no idle one, because as it happens, his village sits on a breech between the two worlds. It turns out, though, that the star is actually a young girl called Yvaine who is the quarry of three witches who have a special use for her, as well as the sons of the king of Stormhold because she holds the key to power. He's got a couple of allies; a devoted mother and a cross-dressing sky pirate. Who will get to Yvaine first?
