Having been on the pointy end of racial discrimination all his life, math teacher, Jim Ellis takes the only job available to him; packer at a recreation centre under threat of demolition. But it does have something going for it; a swimming pool. And that just happens to be Jim's favourite sport. Nobody believes that he'll be able to create a competitive swim team out of the disadvantaged, African - American youth in the area, except for Jim. And the team. A true story which happened all-too recently.
