In the final months of the Second World War, the concentration camps were evacuated before the advancing Soviet and Allied troops could reach them. Of the 700,000 prisoners held in them in January 1945, between 250,000 and 300,000 would perish on so-called death marches. They were massacred by guards escorting the columns, as well as by many civilians, and this often took place on German territory.
