Inspector George Gently is an old-fashioned copper, London style. But after the murder of his wife, a jaded and disillusioned Gently transfers out of London, to fight crime in Northumberland. Here he meets the dubiously respectful, somewhat resentful, and completely rebellious Sergeant John Bacchus, who combines those qualities with a dogged determination to see the job through.
