A group of extraterrestrials made contact with Earth many years ago and no threat from them or their planet has ever been made to the inhabitants of Earth. Nevertheless, the aliens were treated like refugees and the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home for them in District 9 while word leaders debated how to deal with them. A private company called MNU was assigned the task of controlling the aliens and became much more interested in their weaponry. When a field operative for MNU is exposed to biotechnology that makes his DNA mutate, tensions mount and he goes on the run.
