Jim Hackett has entered British Parliament more by good fortune than good strategy. But to stay there, and to hold down an important ministerial post for more than one embarrassing term, he has to not only keep the PM happy, but to also negotiate the treacherous shoals and deeps ruled by sublime civil servant sharks like Sir Humphrey. Oxbridge graduate, born to the Civil Service and upper-class-pratt-but-not-stupid, he manipulates his hapless minister with a long-nosed look and a sneer. Ah, but Hackett didn't get where he is without a solid dose of self-interest. It's upper-middle-class v middle-middle class at ten paces. The LEC indeed!
