Forbidden love; it doesn't matter where it raises its beautiful head, the palaces of Verona, or the mean streets of New York, it's always going to struggle against the prejudices of others. And New York is mean for the young, who peel off into two gangs; the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. When Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks meets Tony, the ex-leader of the Jets, they fall in love. But the gangs are not about to accept what they see as a betrayal. Set to the music of Leonard Bernstein which captures the edgy passion of disadvantaged New York tottering on the border of disappointment and despair, a love story is told just as eloquently as if it had been written by Shakespeare himself.
