An American soldier, battling his own demons after fighting in the Civil War, accepts a well-paid offer to train imperial Japanese soldiers. In the course of quelling a samurai rebellion, he is captured by the so-called enemy and held hostage in the mountains. As cultural barriers break down, he learns the true meaning of honour and sacrifice.
