In the Belier family, everyone is deaf, except dutiful sixteen-year-old Paula. She acts as an interpreter for her parents and younger brother in the running of the family dairy farm. However, she joins a choir, and it's not long before her music teacher discovers her talent. He offers her to sit for the entrance exam of a vocal elite choir in Paris, but her parents take the news badly. Paula, who hates the idea of betraying her parents and her brother, goes through a painful dilemma.
