Judge Deed is left feeling culpable when he sentences a young man to gaol time for theft and he is subsequently killed behind bars. But it's more than that - the victim reminded him of himself at that age. It's probably not the best time to be hearing another case involving Jo's husband-to-be, Marc, who is fighting to withdraw medical treatment from a terminally ill boy with religious parents.
